Búrfell í Grímsnesi

Description

Búrell is an elongated tuff cliff in Grímsnes. The view from the mountain top is quite unique because the larges summer house settlements in Iceland is located just south of Búrfell, stretching from Álftavatn and Þrastarskógur, through a large area in Grímsnes and all the way down to Hvítá. On the top of Búrfell, a small lake in a hollow left behind of an old crater can be found. This lake is said to be connected to Kerið crater also located in Grímsnes. A mythological creature, kelpie, ( IS: Nykur) goes between these lakes tries to lure people onto its back in order to ride with them into the abyss.

The starting point of the hike is east of the fields of the farm Búrfell which is located on the south side of the mountain. Hike up the southern side and all the way to a ridge where the crater lake comes into sight. Walk around the lake and then the same way down again.
