Útigönguhöfði
Description
Útigönguhöfði is one of the most majestic mountains in Goðaland, the area south of Krossá river with Þórsmörk located on the northern side. Útigönguhöfði rises about 800 ASL on the ridge between Hrunárgil and Hvannárgil valleys. A well-marked network of hiking trails runs through all of the Goðaland area and the heart of that network is by the Básar hut in Goðaland. If you arrive at the area by car it is a good idea to leave the car in Básar and start the walk to Útigönguhöfðan from there. (GPS. N. 63. 40. 624 W. 19. 28. 882). If you are staying in Langidalur in Þórsmörk, you start your hike by walking to Básar (about 2 km). From there the route takes you up a steep path but under the cliffs, you turn left and soon you find yourself on the ridge between Básar and Hvannárgil with a magnificent view in all directions. The trail continues up to Útigönguhöfði. The trail is well marked and clear the rest of the way. In parts, the path is steep and those who have fear of heights may need to take deep breaths in some places. Once on the top (GPS. N. 63. 39. 938. W. 19. 27. 498) you are rewarded with great views over Heiðarhorn and Bröttufönn to the east and Eyjafjallajökull seems to be within the reach of your hand. We recommend following the same route down again, but if you continue to the west once you are on the ridge again you can add Réttarfell to your hike.
