Explore the Wonders of Fimmvörðuháls
Fimmvörðuháls is one of Iceland's most iconic hiking trails, offering breathtaking views and tremendous nature. Threading between the glaciers Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull, this 25-kilometer trail connects Skógar to Þórsmörk, or vice versa, providing a unique adventure for hikers. Starting at the majestic Skógafoss waterfall, one of Iceland's most famous, the trail takes you past 26 more waterfalls along the Skógá River, across volcanic landscapes between the glaciers, and down into the vivid Þórsmörk valley. You can also experience the trail in reverse, enjoying the diverse landscapes from a different perspective. This hike takes approximately 8-12 hours to complete.

Seasonal Information
Þórsmörk opens earlier than many other highland areas, typically becoming accessible in May. This makes it a great early-season destination for hikers. The best time to hike Fimmvörðuháls is from early July to early September, when the trail conditions are most favorable, and the weather is relatively stable. Outside of this period, the hike can be challenging due to snow and unpredictable weather, and it is recommended to go with a guide if attempting it in the off-season.
Getting Here
We recommend taking the bus due to difficulty getting to and from Þórsmörk- Langidalur, you need to be an experienced driver to cross the rivers.
By Bus:
Þórsmörk: Getting to Þórsmörk is quite the adventure due to the challenging terrain. Highland Buses are available to navigate the rough tracks and river crossings. These buses run from Reykjavík, Selfoss, Hella, and Hvolsvöllur to Þórsmörk. The Highland Bus service operates daily during the summer months, providing a comfortable and reliable way to reach this remote valley.
Skógar: Regular bus services run to Skógar, making it easily accessible. Buses from Reykjavík and other major towns in the south of Iceland, such as Selfoss and Hella, frequently travel to Skógar. The journey offers scenic views of the south coast, including picturesque farms, villages, and waterfalls.
Safety Tips for Hikers
- Plan Ahead: Check the weather forecast and trail conditions before you start your hike. The weather in Iceland can be unpredictable, so be prepared for rain, wind, and even snow at higher altitudes.
- Weather Conditions: Be prepared for extreme weather at higher altitudes, weather can change quickly.
- Bring Proper Gear: Wear sturdy, waterproof hiking boots and bring a waterproof jacket and trousers. Pack enough food, water, and snacks for the entire hike, as there are no shops or cafés along the trail. There is running water in Baldvinsskáli hut, but it may not always be secure.
- Stay on the Trail: Follow the marked trail to avoid getting lost and to protect the fragile environment.
- Leave No Trace: Respect nature by carrying out all your trash and minimizing your impact on the environment. There is no garbage disposal on the trail.

- Rjúpnafell: The hike to Rjúpnafell is approximately 15 km and takes about 6-7 hours. Its difficulty level is very challenging due to steep and loose trails. This hike is perfect for experienced hikers looking for a challenging and scenic adventure in Þórsmörk. The trail breaks off from the Tindafjöll Circle about midway. From there, it takes you through ravines and steep hills. The path involves tight zigzags up the steep face of Rjúpnafell, making it both physically and mentally demanding. However, the views from the summit are magnificent, offering panoramic views of the surrounding Þórsmörk valley, glaciers, and mountains.
