Getting Here

By Bus:
For those who prefer not to drive, regular bus services are available from Reykjavík, Selfoss, Hella, and Leirubakki. These buses are specially equipped to handle the rough terrain and will get you to Landmannalaugar safely.

By Car:
Driving to Landmannalaugar is an adventure in itself! You'll need a 4x4 vehicle to navigate the rugged F-roads. There are three main routes:

  • F26 and F208 from the north (Sigölduleið): This is the easiest route, with fewer river crossings.
  • F225 from the west (Dómadalsleið/ Landmannaleið): This route offers stunning views of the Hekla volcano.
  • F208 from the south (Fjallabaksleið Nyrðri): The most challenging but also the most scenic, with multiple river crossings.

If you prefer not to cross the rivers, you can park at P1. This option is recommended for smaller SUVs and/or inexperienced drivers. From there, you can cross over a pedestrian bridge to reach the main area.

Please note that a service fee will be charged starting summer 2025, and parking reservations are required between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM from June 20 to September 14. Bookings are made through the Icelandic Environment and Energy Agency, the Nature Conservation Agency of Iceland, and the Parka app

Things to Do

Hiking:
Landmannalaugar is a hiker's dream, offering trails for all levels of experience:

  • Shorter Hikes:
    • Laugahraun Lava Field Circle: 4,8 km and about 1,5-2-hour hike through a stunning lava field.
    • Brennisteinsalda: Known as the Sulphur Wave, this hike offers incredible views of the colorful mountains. This hike is an extension to the Laugahraun Lava Field Circle. 3,4 km.
    • Bláhnúkur: A challenging 4-hour hike up the Blue Peak, offering panoramic views of the region.
  • Longer Hikes:
    • Ljótipollur: 13 km and about 4-6-hour hike to an explosion crater lake with stunning red lava rock and blue waters.
    • Skallahringur: 15,5 and about 6-8hour loop hike starting from Landmannalaugar, taking you over the sands below Brandsgil and up to Vörðuhnúkur, offering diverse and beautiful landscapes.

Hot Springs:
After a day of hiking, relax in the natural geothermal hot springs. The warm waters are perfect for soothing tired muscles and enjoying the serene landscape.
